Shelf's reader includes a Tutor panel beside your document. Questions about the open file run through a retrieval pipeline that searches indexed chunks of your library — vector search when configured, keyword fallback otherwise — and composes answers with citations back to collection, topic, and page titles.

Selection-aware questions
Select text before asking to narrow context to that passage — ideal for dense judgments, formulae, or definitions. With nothing selected, Tutor uses retrieved chunks spread across that PDF. A long file also gets a section map saved when the page is indexed: an outline and short section summaries first, then the matching passages for quotes.

Saved page threads
Each document can keep one saved page-scoped thread. Reopen the PDF and your prior Q&A restores in the reader panel. If a reply fails, the question stays in the thread instead of the chat vanishing. Jump to /study-ai/[id] to continue the same conversation with full history, images, and library scope controls.
Planner and quizzes from Ask
In free-form Ask mode, say “remind me to revise this tomorrow” or “make a quiz on this chapter.” Tutor creates planner items and starts quizzes, then shares links to /planner or /quiz/:id. Summarize, Notes, and Mind map stay document-focused without those actions.

How retrieval stays grounded
When you ask a question, Shelf embeds your query and searches indexed chunks from your library — vector similarity when Qdrant is configured, keyword search otherwise. Top passages are injected into the prompt with collection, topic, and page labels.
The model is instructed to prefer those excerpts over general knowledge. If your library has nothing relevant, Tutor says so instead of inventing citations.

The reader panel is for quick questions while you read — explain this paragraph, define this term, contrast these two sentences. The full /study-ai workspace adds longer threads, image attachments, library scope toggles, and history search.
Page-scoped threads save automatically per document. Library-wide chat starts fresh but can pull from every indexed page you authorize.
Prompt patterns that work
Ask for exam-shaped outputs: "List five prelims-style MCQ traps from this chapter," or "Give a 150-word introduction for an essay on this topic using only my notes."
Chain questions: first summarize, then ask for a table comparing two sections, then request mnemonics — each turn sees prior answers in the thread.

Questions and answers belong to your account. They are not used to train public models. Uploaded PDFs stay in your private object-storage prefix unless you explicitly use shared curriculum on /learn.
Delete a page and its chunks drop out of search after processing catches up — your library remains yours to curate and purge.
Study goals shape the voice
Attach a course outline or focus your question so answers match the depth and terminology you need. New messages can use the latest context in your library.
Outputs use Markdown headings and tables so you can paste into collection-level doc pages or external notes with minimal reformatting.
